Sponsor Spotlight: LGFCU

Between now and the start of the 2016 Summer Conference, an occasional series on NCLGBA’s blog will shine a spotlight on our conference sponsors so that you can get to know them and the services they provide.  First up is the Local Government Federal Credit Union – an annual Legislative level conference sponsor.

The Local Government Federal Credit Union, or LGFCU as it is commonly known, is a not-for-profit, full service financial cooperative. LGFCU offers Checking, Share, and Money Market accounts; auto, home, and personal loans; Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs); credit cards, insurance and more. It is the only statewide credit union exclusively serving North Carolina municipal and county employees, elected/appointed officials, volunteers and their families. Rather than operate its own branches, LGFCU partners with State Employees’ Credit Union to share its network of more than 250 branches and nearly 1,100 ATMs across the state. So when you visit a SECU branch, you are also visiting a LGFCU branch.

LGFCU provides scholarship funds for local government employees to apply towards tuition for conferences, classes and seminars offered by the UNC School of Government (SOG). LGFCU supports the School of Government because of the instrumental role it serves in the professional development of its membership. Are you thinking about in taking a course, but not sure if your jurisdiction will be able to cover the cost?  Learn more about the scholarships they provide here.

Interested in hearing from an NCLGBA member who has been awarded a scholarship? Stephen Hawryluk, Senior Budget & Evaluation Analyst from the City of Winston-Salem describes his experience with LGFCU,

The Local Government Federal Credit Union has been more than a local banking institution for me. I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship from the LGFCU in the fall of 2010 that covered the entire registration costs for the Municipal and County Administration course at the University of North Carolina School of Government. That course has been a valuable asset in my development as a local government budgeting professional and I cannot thank the LGFCU enough for going above and beyond in their service to members and the jurisdictions they serve.”

In addition to their scholarship program, LGFCU covers the entire cost of tuition for two cohorts to attend an intensive two-week leadership development program at the UNC School of Government each year. The Local Government Federal Credit Union Fellows Program includes coaching and leadership training.  Learn more about it here.
