If you’re anything like me, there are one or two educators whose classroom you remember much more than any others. Dr. Gary Rassel’s budget class in UNC Charlotte’s MPA program was one of those special places. Working my way through the Adams County Library exercises helped me figure out that I was meant for a career in budget.
Dr. Gary Rassel and his wife Dr. Merry Chambers have been long-time supporters of NCLGBA. In 2011, NCLGBA presented Dr. Rassel with the Jack Vogt award, recognizing his years of service and support of the budgeting profession in North Carolina. Drs. Rassel and Merry also regular attenders of our bi-annual conferences.
One of the missions of NCLGBA is promote the budgeting profession through education, so I wanted to make everyone aware that UNC Charlotte’s Gerald G. Fox Master of Public Administration program about to kick off a month-long campaign to endow its longest-awarded scholarship.
The Burkhalter-Rassel Scholarship was established to honor the memory of David Burkhalter, who served as the City Manager of Charlotte from 1971 to 1981. Upon his retirement, Faculty Emeritus/former MPA Director Gary Rassel’s name was added to the scholarship. Dr. Rassel taught Research Methods and Budgeting in the MPA program from 1982-2012. This scholarship is awarded to a first-year student each fall semester.
The crowdfunding campaign goal is $8,000 of which more than half has already been raised! The campaign details and methods for donation can be found here. This site will be active from March 16 to April 14. Endowing this scholarship means it can be awarded in perpetuity and scholarship assistance will always be available for MPA students.
If you have had the chance to get to know Dr. Rassel, please consider giving today; any amount you can contribute will help UNCC reach its goal!
