Matthew Mitchell with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University published this graph as part of his study at state government spending patters and levels over the past quarter-century. As you can see, while real spending growth is significant across all spending groups (with the exception of cash assistance), they are all dwarfed by the substantial growth of Medicaid.
